Plain Pattern Project - Muslin #1

I just uploaded my muslin photos to the Plain Pattern Project Flickr Pool.

While I adore the idea of the back gathers, I don't like how they are executed.
Exhibit A - fuzzy :(
The hunchback of sewing fame!
Aside from an FBA, a necessary un-petiting and the skirt is too wide, all of which are not a surprise to me, it is the gathers that have me troubled.
I like them in theory, but the pattern drafting is awkward and I don't know how to save them with a raglan sleeve.  If it were a normal sleeve I would create a yoke and then gather below the yoke so that the fullness is coming from somewhere, but as drafted they appear to appear out of ?!?!?!?!?!?!?.

Oh ya and see that dog?  He's the king of pathetic looks.

It has been SO VERY HUMID here.  No joke.  Awful humid.  Gross.  However, I did finally manage to add my waistband closure and hem my tan wool high waisted pants a la Simplicity 3688.  I can't believe how LOOOOOOOOOONG ago I started these puppies.  They are keyute.  When it cools down I'll photograph them and do up a bit of a review.

ETA:  Here is a potential pattern solution to my back pouf problem.  The pattern has a side zip, not a back bodice zip so this might work:
I would have to remove the gathers at the bottom and sew the pleat down... food for thought.

  1. Thank you so much for muslining this Burda dress. In a fit of laziness, I actually considered making it as is but that back poof is just TOO MUCH!!!

I'm Petite so I won't be altering it beyond changing the back...I hope!

Thanks for helping save my good fabric!

  2. I'm glad I could help. I really really wanted this to work out for me because I really like this dress. I've ditched this as my plain pattern because I need a more day to day activity friendly dress but I will sew it up one day, mark my words! The center back seam will make taking some of the poof out easier.

I can't wait to see your version. I'll keep my eye out for your review PR!
